Conditions: Two (2) nonrated sliding doors will be provided in the existing wall separating the existing  Media Center and the corridor.  The openings are required to be fire-rated per current code  based upon location within a corridor wall. 

The project scope is renovation of the existing Media Center, including new doors and  borrowed lites in various locations in existing corridor walls.  This portion of the existing  building was constructed in the 1968.

Facts: 1.   The new sliding doors will replace existing nonrated doors currently in these corridor wall openings.  The code (1967 Indiana Building Rules) in effect for the original construction did  not require fire-rated corridor construction.   

2. Smoke detection will be provided in the existing Media Center connected to the building fire  alarm system.

3.   Other new doors and borrowed lites to be installed in the existing corridor wall will be fire- rated as required for fire partitions per current code. 

4.   Similar variances have been granted in the past, including 19-12-66b, 18-10-51, 18-03-51, 18-03-50, 17-12-39, 17-12-38, and 17-05-55.
DEMONSTRATION OF UNDUE HARDSHIP OR HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURE:

Facts: The sliding doors are proposed to allow ease of entry and exit from the Media Center, and will also provide the necessary noise barrier, while providing the desired visibility between the  corridor and the Media Center.
