Conditions:

The 2-hour fire barrier separating the 3rd floor from the vertical opening (2-story lobby) connecting the 1st and 2nd floor levels will have a nonrated glass wall in lieu of a prescriptive fire-rated assembly.

The project involves construction of a 3-story + lower level addition that will connect two (2) existing ca. 1970 buildings. The project includes significant renovation of all floors of Gallahue Hall, and the 1st and 2nd floors of Holcomb Hall. The building will be classified as A-3 and B Occupancies, and Type IB Construction.

DEMONSTRATION THAT PUBLIC HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELFARE ARE PROTECTED:

Facts:

1. The glass wall will be protected on the room side with a row of sprinklers spaced 6 feet on center, located at the ceiling level within 12 inches of the glazing. The demand for the sprinkler curtain will be added to the demand for the ceiling sprinkers.
2. The addition + existing building will be protected throughout with an automatic sprinkler system per NFPA 13.
3. Similar variances have granted previously for openings in fire-rated walls with a rating of 2 hours or more, including 19-07-52c, 18-08-35c, 18-02-55c, 17-11-68a, 18-02-28b, 19-05-71b, 16-10-33b, and 15-11-28a.

A draft curtain 18 inches in depth will be provided at the Gallahue Hall connection to the pedestrian walkway, with a row of sprinklers spaced 6 feet on center, located at the ceiling level within 12 inches of the draft curtain.  The demand for the sprinkler curtain will be added to the demand for the ceiling sprinkers.
2.    Gallahue Hall and connected Holcomb Hall (along with the addition) will be protected throughout with an automatic sprinkler system per NFPA 13.  The pedestrian walkway will also be sprinkler-protected as part of this project.  The existing buildings are not currently sprinklered.
3. A new set of 90-minute rated doors will be provided at the connection to Jordan Hall.
4. Similar variances have granted previously a draft curtain with sprinklers to separate a pedestrian walkway at one or both ends, including 18-11-52a, 18-10-45, 18-01-28, and 16- 11-29b.
