Conditions: Smoke dampers will not be installed in ventilation supply ducts serving corridors since  variance was granted for dorm room doors to not be required to have door closers (variance #18-06-50).

Facts: 1. The building will be protected throughout with a sprinkler system per NFPA 13.  

2. The corridors will be provided with a smoke detection system connected to the building fire  alarm system - corridor smoke detectors are not required by code.  Each sleeping room will  be provided with single-station smoke alarms, as required.

3. This request is identical to approved installations for three (3) recently constructed  residence halls at UND.

Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of physical limitations of the construction site or its utility services.

Facts: The hardship is the initial installation cost and ongoing cost of maintaining smoke dampers  that would provide no real life safety benefit, since a variance was granted for dorm room  doors to not be required to have door closers (variance #18-06-50). In other words, due to  the fact that there is no real smoke barrier at the door to each bedroom, adding smoke  dampers in the duct serving the corridor would not create an effective smoke barrier.
