Variance Details
Code Name:  Other Code (Not in the list provided)
2014 InBC 1016.2.2
Conditions: A new large volume warehouse (approx. 1,100,000 sq.ft.) will have a travel distance up to 480  feet.  A three (3) tiered pick module is extending the distance beyond the code allowed 400 ft. with an ESFR sprinkler system.
DEMONSTRATION THAT PUBLIC HEALTH, SAFETY, AND WELFARE ARE PROTECTED:
1=Non-compliance with the rule will not be adverse to the public health, safety or w
2
2= Applicant will undertake alternative actions in lieu of compliance with the rule to  ensure that granting of the variance will not be adverse to public health, safety, or  welfare.  Explain why alternative actions would be adequate (be specific).
Facts: 1. The entire building will be sprinklered as required by code.  The storage area and pick  modules will have an Early Suppression Fast Response (ESFR) system.
2.  The building will have an fire alarm system with horns and strobes, not required by code.
3.  The high roof (44 feet) and overall area create a volume for smoke to accumulate allowing  more time for exiting.
4.  Smoke and egress modeling, without sprinkler intervention, show adequate exiting time  under tenable conditions.
5.  Similar variances have been approved, including the other Walmart facility in Plainfield.

DEMONSTRATION OF UNDUE HARDSHIP OR HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURE:
Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of physical limitations of the construction site or its utility services.

Y Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of major operational problems in the use of the building or structure.
Y Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of excessive costs of additional or altered construction elements.
Imposition of the rule would prevent the preservation of an  architecturally or a historically significant part of the building or structure

Facts: The hardship is the need to provide efficient storage space and accommodate shipping  needs with a pick module.
