Conditions: |

The existing closing devices for 20-minute rated corridor doors have been replace with a closing device that permits the doors to be held open between class periods. The new closing devices (see attached data sheet and specs) technically do not maintain the required fire rating of the corridor doors, based upon the hold-open function. Existing building features are required to be maintained in accordance with the applicable codes of record. The code in effect for the 1992 addition (1989 Indiana Building Code) required fire- rated corridor doors with self-closing devices. The original portion of the building was constructed 1965-1967, prior to the requirement for fire-rated corridors in Indiana.

1. The School Corporation¿s policy for classroom doors is for the doors to remain closed and locked (from the corridor side) during each and every class period for security. The doors will also remain closed when unoccupied.
2. The closers provide the required self-closing function at all times other than during the time between class periods to facilitate student movement into and out of classrooms without using the conventional methods of door stops and similar methods that work around the self-closing function of door closers.

The closers were installed as part of the school corporation¿s effort to increase safety and security for students and staff at their four (4) school facilities. The closers provide an efficient method for staff to open and close classroom doors without using the conventional methods of door stops and similar methods that work around the self-closing function of door closers.
