Conditions: Code requires sprinklers to be provided in stories without openings (for fire department  access) with over 1,500 square feet of floor area.   The request is to not provide sprinklers in  the basement level of a new pharmacy building.  

The project involves construction of a new 1-story plus basement pharmacy building with  approximately 3,000sf per floor. The building is classified Type VB construction with B/M/F- 2/S-1 occupancies.

Facts: 1. The building will be provided with a monitored fire alarm system  (not required by code). 
2. An exterior door is provided at the top of the open interior stairway.
3. Distance to the opposite basement wall from the bottom of the stairs is less than 50 feet  (approx. 45 feet).  Travel down the stairs from the exterior door at 1st floor is approximately 30  feet. (Code would permit exterior opening on one side of basement with opposite wall less  than 75 feet without sprinklers.)
