The variance is needed so that St. Lukes United Methodist Church can continue to conduct  community service events, camps, dinners, church activities, and youth outreach through  the summer months.

The variance is needed to provide a tent for community events for the duration of the summer months while kids are out of school. The time period exceeds the 30 days allowed.

Facts: St. Lukes UMC has been a part of the Indianapolis community since 1959. This project is an  extension of their ongoing community outreach and desire to serve others. The tent is located on the church property and will be used to compliment indoor and outdoor outreach activities. Not having the extra space the tent provides limits the scope of events that the church wants  to provide and limits the amount of adults and children they can provide services to due to  space confinement. 
The tent is manufactured by Anchor Industries, Evansville IN., a leading manufacturer for over  150 years. The tent is originally supplied with 30" stakes for securing. However, we will be  using 42" long stakes for extra security and double stake the corners which can be high  stress areas.

Facts: St Lukes UMC needs additional space during the summer months for a period of 12-15 weeks. It is not cost effective or feasible for the church to construct a building for this summer  outreach opportunity when a tent will accommodate the needs adequately. The tent provides  shade from the sun and the heat for children, adults and elderly as they enjoy the outdoor  events.
This is the third summer the church is implementing the seasonal program. Due to the peaked interest and word of mouth, and an overwhelming positive response to the past two years  activities, the church expects an increased attendance for the summer of 2019.  The church  has determined there is a need in the community for this long term outreach to provide a safe  and positive environment for the community....and it's FREE!
For the reasons stated above, we ask that you grant our request for the variance to extend the tent rental period past the 30 days allowed in order to provide a much needed and desired  community service. It's nice to be able to encourage and provide a positive experience for all  involved.
