IN Elevator Safety Code 1.2

Conditions:

Indiana Amendment to section 1.2 requires "all keys associated with the equipment  described in Section 1.1 shall be placed in a heavy metal enclosure.  All such keys shall be  clearly identified.  The enclosure shall be conspicuously located and identified by a sign  stating "FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY"... The security access cards issued to students and staff will not be provided in the elevators  lock boxes. This variance applies to all elevators located on  the campus of and under the sole control of the University of Notre Dame.

Facts:

Security access cards are under strict control and issued only to persons known to the  university for limited access.   The key boxes at each elevator contain the switch keys required by section 2.27.8 of ASME  A17.1.  per section 2.27.3.3.1 (i). The Phase II Emergency In-Car Operation Key operated  switch will render the security access cards means to prevent the operation of floor selection  buttons inoperative.   A security Card can be provided upon request to the elevator inspector and are provided to  University of Notre Dame security and emergency personal.

Facts:

Growing security issues across the country and college campuses require stricter  implementation and control.  In order to properly track access cards, cards are only issued  to individuals where they can by monitored and controlled.  Security assessments are now in  place that restrict the issuance of random access cards not in the control of an individual.   Locating cards in each elevator box across the campus would be difficult to track.  Access  would be permitted by an unknown user.
