Conditions: Mall food court dining area will have an artwork piece hung from the ceiling. The art will  involve stainless steel, wire cables, and plastic sheet material.  Fire Code requires  combustible decorative materials to be tested per NFPA 701.
The plastic has not been tested per NFPA 701.

Facts: The product has been tested per ASTM D 635 and E 84.  The building code permits the  product to be used in roof panels, skylights, wall panels and storefront signage (building  construction).

The building is fully sprinklered per NFPA 13.

Flame spread index is approximately 140.  Self ignition temperature is 910 F.  Burn rate is  about 1.5 in per minute per ASTM D 635.

Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of physical limitations of the construction site or its utility services.

Facts: NFPA 701 test is for fabrics, textiles and film material, thus does not seem appropriate for  plastic sheet.  The ASTM D 635 test is for plastic material and the code permits it in the  building construction.
