Conditions: A reconfigured egress corridor will have one (1) of the two (2) required means of egress  through the existing gymnasium.  Code does not permit a fire-rated corridor to pass through  an intervening room unless classified as a 'foyer, lobby, or reception room'.
The project involves interior renovation of the existing building, including moving the  administration area and other measures to improve school safety and security.

Facts: 1.  The gymnasium will be provided with smoke detection tied to the building fire alarm system.

2.  The corridor in question will be secured to prevent access to the academic areas of the  building only after hours.

3.  Egress through the gymnasium will not be adverse to safety, as it is a large volume space  with visibility and ready access to two (2) exits from the gym.

Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of physical limitations of the construction site or its utility services.

Facts: The project involves reconfiguration of existing circulation paths in order to prevent after- hours access to academic areas of the building, as well as improve overall security by  moving the administration area to create a secure entrance.  Based upon the existing layout  of the building, the proposed egress scheme for the corridor in question is the best option  without compromising security needs.
