Conditions: An existing non-sprinklered school of 29,584 square feet on the first floor constructed of Type II-B construction will have an existing 339 square feet entry canopy renovated and enclosed  as a new security vestibule. The new vestibule and existing building will exceed the  allowable area permitted for Type II-B construction.The code would require the vestibule to  be separated from the existing school by a 4 hour fire wall.

Facts: 1. The new vestibule will be constructed of non-combustible Type II-B construction.
2. The existing smoke detection system will be extended into the new vestibule.
3. The fire load of the vestibule will be extremely low.
4. The vestibule is need to provide additional security and safety for the students and staff.

Imposition of the rule would result in an undue hardship (unusual difficulty)  because of physical limitations of the construction site or its utility services.
