Conditions: An automatic sprinkler system is required in buildings containing wood working operations  that exceed 2,500 square feet.  The variance request is to permit a dust collection system in  accordance with NFPA 664, 2012 Edition, Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions  in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities, in lieu of an automatic sprinkler system.

The building will be 1-story, Type VB construction, and will be approximately 4,800 square  feet.

Facts: 1. The code requires an automatic sprinkler system because of the potential amount of  combustible dust that could be generated during woodworking operations.  The installation of  a dust collection system in accordance with NFPA 664 will reduce the potential amount of  combustible dust in the air, therefore the lack of a sprinkler system is not adverse to safety.

2. The building will have at least 60 feet open space surrounding it. 

3.  Numerous similar variances have been approved, including 18-09-09, 18-08-09, 18-07-70, 18-06-23, 18-03-62, 18-03-13, 17-11-12, 17-10-53, 17-10-10, 17-03-54, 17-01-42, 16-10-37,  16-10-31, 16-10-02.
