Conditions: An existing non-sprinklered church with a basement currently has 5,937 square feet on the  first floor and 5,122 square feet on the basement level. A new commons addition of  approximately 2,150 square feet to the first floor will increase the fire area and put the church  into further noncompliance with the code's requirement for an automatic fire sprinkler  system.

Facts: 1. The building be provided with an automatic fire alarm system with smoke detection. 
2. The new commons addition will not increase the occupant load of the building. The  commons area will not be used simultaneously with the sanctuary. 
3. The new addition will additional egress capacity as well as providing a third exit for the first  floor.  The new egress capacity will be capable of accommodating 540 people. The actual  occupant load of the church is 124.
