Conditions: LVL (laminated veneer lumber) beams penetrate the gypsum board membranes of 2-hour fire walls in a number of locations.  There is no available listed fire stop system or 2-hour wall  test specifically validating this type of penetration.
The project involves construction of a mixed use development that includes a Type IA podium consisting of two (2) levels of below-grade parking and 1st floor commercial tenant spaces,  and 4 stories + mezzanines Type VA residential apartments.

Facts: 1.   The LVL¿s approach heavy timber mass - they are typically 3½¿ X 12" in size.   The beams tie into wood ¿posts¿ within the 2-hour wall assembly consisting of three (3) 2" X 6" nominal  studs fastened together.  The large mass of the members involved have an inherent fire- resistance.
2. The opening through the gypsum board membrane will be firestopped around the beam  penetrations with fire caulking.
Small closets will be provided with sprinkler protection (not required for a 13R system).
3.   The building is protected by an NFPA 13R sprinkler system, with enhancements including  a design density of 0.1 gpm per sq ft per NFPA 13 in lieu of 0.05 gpm per sq ft permitted per  NFPA 13R, design area per NFPA 13 in lieu of the reductions in design area permitted per  NFPA 13R, and floor control valves will provided to permit annunciation of individual floors.
4.   Based upon the mass of the penetrating structural members involved and enhanced  sprinkler protection, the penetrations of the 2-hour wall will not be adverse to safety.
