The project involves renovation and addition to the existing jail facility.   The building is 1- story with a total of 50,572sf.  The building is classified as Type IIB Construction with Group I- 3 Occupancy.

Facts: 1.  The dayrooms are not public spaces.  Section 907.5.2.3 does not require visible  notification in resident areas of I-3 Occupancy.
2.  The system complies with Section 907.2.6 for Group I Occupancies, Exception 2, which  allows responder/staff notification in lieu of occupant notification where private mode  signalling is installed in accordance with NFPA 72.  There is no requirement in NFPA 72 for  visible notification to be provided when using Private Operating Mode.  It is left up to the  designer to determine where visible notification appliances should be provided.
3.  Staff will be notified as required by Section 907.2.6.3.  Notification is provided to multiple staff (control room, reception, etc.) who then implement the emergency plan and notify other staff.
4.  Private Mode is used in occupancies such as jails and hospitals where smoke barriers  are provided and upon alarm not all occupants will be evacuated or even moved.

Facts: It is important to keep notification appliances out of resident areas for security reasons.  Jails  are split into smoke compartments that allow individual compartments to be evacuated during  an event without having to evacuate the entire building.   If notification is provided in a  compartment separate from the event compartment, it can cause panic among inmates that  aren't being evacuated and can be dangerous for the guards.  Notification is provided to staff  as required.
